Djembe means ‘to Gather in Peace’, and these drums are usually used to spread some peace and happiness among the people. Mainly from West Africa, this drum is shaped like a goblet. Make different versions of this drum at home using plastic cups, masking tape, the wide end of a balloon for the top of the drum and an elastic band to hold it in place.

A lot of children in Ireland play Xs and Os but in Ghana the children play Achi.
They usually mark the game board on the ground and use little sticks as playing pieces. One player will have four little sticks with the bark on, and the other player will have four sticks with the bark off. A game board like those used for Achi was found carved into a roofing slab of the temple at Al-Qurna in Egypt. It dates from 3,500 years ago. You can click on the image to the right to learn how to make your own Achi board. |
